When you mention manga to anyone, they immediately think of Dragon Ball Z, Naruto and One Piece. Don’t get me wrong I love them all in fact, I’m a huge One Piece fan. While browsing the manga section at bookstore in Chicago, I picked up a copy of Oishinbo. The first thing that caught my attention was how beautifu the drawing which made it more inviting to read. Finishing the first chapter or as the author calls it “First Course” I knew this was a gem I just discovered. So I bought the whole series. As I went through them, I learned a lot about Japanese cooking and flavors. Not to mention how to eat certain dishes. My personal favorite was the Izakaya 居酒屋 book. Oishinbo is a story about a father and his son challenging each other on creating the best Japanese food. The stories were interesting, sophisticating, mature and sometimes funny. Check it out if you like cooking, Japanese food or just want to dive into a short manga series.
